Same $200, half the usage. Happy DevDay.
The night before its big developer event, OpenAI cut Pro $200 from 20x to 10x usage. Feel shortchanged? There's a $500 plan for that.
The day before DevDay, while OpenAI was telling everyone how exciting the show was going to be, Thibault Sottiaux posted a little heads-up on X: the $200 Pro plan is changing. Same $200. Half the usage. 20 times the Plus allowance is now 10. GPT-6 Pro chat goes from 200 messages a week to 100. Happy DevDay.
But don't worry, the models are more efficient now. OpenAI says the smaller allowance reflects "our increasingly efficient models." How efficient? Efficient enough. You'll see once you use them. To his credit, Sottiaux did the math out loud: "In effect, if you do the math, it will net out at half the dollar in API spend compared to the old Pro $200 plan."
The part that stings: it's a rug pull. You signed up for 20x at $200 a month, and the deal changes under you. Existing subscribers keep 20x until October 29, plus a one-time 62,500 credits, about $2,500, that expire December 31. Then, on October 30, half of it is gone.
And what about the people who actually burn tokens, the ones who might feel a little betrayed? OpenAI thought of them too. Meet Pro 500: $500 a month for 25 times Plus. Compared with what $200 bought last month, that's 25% more usage for 150% more money. Now that is a deal.
Pro 500 also comes with something special: Ultrafast. Not fast mode. Ultrafast. GPT-6 Astra in Codex at up to eight times the speed, around 300 tokens per second, eating your allowance at eight times the standard rate. You can finally spend your money ultra fast. One developer who bought the plan to test it ran a 1 minute 41 second implementation task and watched 2% of the weekly limit disappear. Others say they've burned a whole week in 40 minutes.
It is a little addictive, though.
The one thing OpenAI gave back: the five-hour usage window is gone on Pro 200 and Pro 500. Now you can run out of your weekly limit whenever you like.
