GPT-6.1 Sol targets capable agents at a lower token price
OpenAI's new Sol model brings stronger coding and computer use to the API, ChatGPT Work and Codex. Standard input and output tokens cost one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra's rates.
OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay on September 29. The model is available through the API as gpt-6.1-sol and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for eligible paid plans. The launch announcement distinguishes those products from regular Chat, where the model was not yet available.
Standard API rates are $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens and $0.10 per million cached input tokens.
OpenAI reports improvements in software engineering, computer use and multi-step business tasks. Its evaluations put Sol near Astra on several workloads, while Astra remains stronger on its hardest scientific research benchmark.
The practical opportunity is to test whether routine agent work can meet the same quality bar at a lower cost. Token prices alone do not determine a completed task's bill: reasoning effort, retries and how much context can be reused still matter.
