Tibo just put Codex on a 28-day ship-or-reset streak
OpenAI's Codex lead says the team will ship one real W every day until November, or everybody gets their usage limits refilled. Devs have never been this hyped for a team to miss a deadline.
Ya boy Tibo is cooking!
On Sunday, OpenAI's Codex lead Tibo Sottiaux dropped a post on X that put the entire Codex team on a 28-day speedrun: "Over the next 28 days, each day we'll either ship one thing that is a clear improvement and relevant for most codex/work users or ship a full reset. Let the improvements begin."
Before the timeline gets ahead of itself again: this is not 28 free resets. Half of X read it that way within the hour, and the hopium was flowing. The actual deal is either/or. Every day, the team either ships a real QoL win for most Codex and ChatGPT Work users, or it eats the L and refills everyone's usage limits. Ship or reset, daily, until the start of November.
If you're not in the Codex trenches, "reset" sounds like a participation trophy. If you are, it's the whole game. Rate limits are the number one thing Codex users complain about, and a reset, when OpenAI wipes everyone's quota back to full, is basically free tokens. The community tracks them like crypto prices. Trackers have logged 59 resets so far, there are sites forecasting the next drop, and one of them is literally called "Pray for a Codex reset." No notes.
The timing makes sense. OpenAI shipped GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay on September 29 and wired it straight into Codex, and the servers felt it. A global reset went out on October 2, then a botched partial reset left some Pro users rate-limited the very next day. Vibes were mid. Tibo needed a W.
So what counts as a "clear improvement"? Tibo's roadmap has four buckets: simplifications, more efficiency per unit of usage, groundbreaking features, and new models. The first one is the tell. Per Tibo, user feedback is loud and clear that people want Codex to get simpler. Translation: the feature soup has gotten out of hand, and the team knows it. Fewer toggles, fewer modes, more just-works.
Now for the galaxy-brain part. If you're a power user staring at a drained weekly quota, a missed day is the better outcome. A new setting is cool. A full tank of tokens is cooler. Tibo may have just shipped the first roadmap in history where a big chunk of the user base is actively rooting for the devs to miss.
Is it a smart play? Absolutely. Users win either way, and OpenAI gets four straight weeks of main-character energy while Anthropic's Claude Code fights for the same devs. But a public streak is also a public scoreboard. The team decides what counts as a "clear improvement," and the replies decide whether it's a W or cope. Expect every daily drop to get either ratioed or glazed, with no in-between.
Twenty-eight days, twenty-eight chances to ship. Keep one eye on the changelog and the other on your usage meter. LFG.
